Description
INTRODUCTION Adult-onset diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) is one of the most prevalent diseases that affect older adults in the United States. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (8), approximately 21% of persons aged 60 years and older have diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes leads to increased risk for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney disease, dental disease, nervous system damage, and amputations (8). Specifically, nervous system damage from diabetic peripheral neuropathy is prevalent in approximately 60% to 70% of people with diabetes (8). This results in muscular weakness, pain, tingling sensations, and even a complete loss of sensation in distal extremities (36). Persons with Type II diabetes may experience muscle atrophy (42, 50), foot deformities (29), high plantar pressures (37, 46), and gait changes (6, 7, 41, 44) due to decreased sensory recognition and integration.
